5 most frequently asked questions about breast augmentation with Dr. van der Weij

Author:Boerhaave

Breast augmentation is one of the most commonly performed cosmetic procedures. Many people have questions before taking the step. Here are the 5 most frequently asked questions about breast augmentation, answered by Dr. van der Weij, plastic surgeon at Boerhaave.

  1. What different implants are there?
There are two main types of implants that are used most: silicone and saline implants. Silicone implants feel softer and more natural and are therefore popular with many women. Saline implants are filled with a sterile salt solution. There are also different shapes, such as round implants for a fuller look and teardrop-shaped (anatomical) implants, which give a more natural result. Which option suits you best depends on your build, the volume and shape of your breasts and, of course, your own wishes. During your consultation, we can discuss these choices in detail.
  2. How long do the implants last?
Mentor and Motiva implants are of high quality and approved by the FDA (Food and Drug Administration). In principle, they are intended to last a lifetime, but that does not mean they never need to be replaced. Although wear or small tears are very rare, the policy is that you only need to come in if you have complaints or notice changes in the shape of your breast. As long as you have no complaints and your breasts look good and feel supple, there is no reason to replace the implants periodically.
  3. What is the recovery process like after a breast augmentation?
Recovery usually goes smoothly, and most patients experience little to no pain. This can be misleading, because you soon feel active again. However, it is important to wear a sports bra day and night for 6 weeks. You can do almost anything, except exercise or heavy lifting. Avoid lifting more than 10 kilos.
  4. Above or below the muscle?
When the skin is thick enough, the implant is better placed above the muscle. The advantages are that the pectoral muscle does not need to be cut, resulting in less pain and a faster recovery. An implant in front of the muscle looks more natural, feels softer and moves more. With thin skin, the implant is better placed “dual plane” (partly under the muscle). The main reason an implant is placed under the muscle has to do with the thickness of the skin and the amount of fatty tissue. If the skin is not thick enough, an implant can become visible when it is placed above the pectoral muscle.
  5. My breasts are uneven. Is it possible to place two different sizes of implant?
Yes, absolutely! Many women naturally have asymmetrical breasts. It is possible to place implants of two different sizes.
