The origins of Boerhaave

The Boerhaave Clinic in Amsterdam was founded in 1902. The clinic is named after Hermanus Boerhaave, who was highly regarded in the seventeenth century as a physician and professor of clinical medicine. Thanks to his expertise, Leiden University grew to become the premier center for medical education. Monarchs such as Francis I and Tsar Peter I sought medical advice from Boerhaave.

The Boerhaave Clinic in Amsterdam began as a private clinic in 1902. After the death of its founder and owner, Mendes de Leon, in 1924, a medical consortium—the Boerhaave Clinic Association—took over the clinic’s management. In 1994, under this board’s leadership, the Boerhaave Clinic closed. The impetus for the closure came in 1982 with the so-called “Gardeniers List” drawn up by Til Gardeniers, State Secretary for Public Health. This was followed by twelve years of political struggle.

As chair of the medical staff at the Boerhaave Clinic, internist Pieter Maurits Elte (1948) led a widely supported resistance movement—comprising doctors, patients, local residents, and staff—against the closure of the Boerhaave Clinic. On August 31, 1994, the closure became a reality, after which the Boerhaave Clinic resumed operations on the initiative and under the leadership of Marijke Elte-Kreps (1946), wife of the internist Elte. Since 1995, the Boerhaave Clinic has once again been a private clinic operating under the name Boerhaave Clinic. After more than 100 years on Museumplein, the Boerhaave Clinic has been located on Dintelstraat in Amsterdam since 2014. In 2022, a clinic with six operating rooms was added in Utrecht, and in 2026, an outpatient clinic also opened in Arnhem.

We'll guide you through the entire process

  • Do you have a specific request? Or are you considering a particular procedure? If so, you can schedule a consultation with one of our experienced plastic surgeons, ENT specialists, or ophthalmologists.

The consultation is free and non-binding. It’s easy to schedule through our website. You can also make an appointment by calling 088 4000 200.

We’re open 365 days a year from 7:00 a.m. to 10:00 p.m., including weekends and holidays. During these hours, we’re available to answer general questions and schedule consultations.

  • For many people, scheduling their first appointment for plastic surgery is a big step. We understand that you want to approach this consultation with care. That’s why your first consultation at Boerhaave always takes place with the specialist who will actually be treating you.

    At your treatment location

Your consultation will take place at the location where you’ll receive treatment. This way, you’ll get to know both your plastic surgeon and the treatment facility right away. The consultation is free and non-binding and lasts about 30–45 minutes. Take your time for your appointment. You may be presented with a lot of information all at once. You’re therefore welcome to bring your partner or a friend along.

Do you still have questions after the consultation? You can always contact one of our consultants. If you’d like, you can also schedule a free follow-up consultation with your plastic surgeon.

    Consultation with the counselor

After the consultation, you’ll discuss the practical details of any potential treatment with the consultant, such as scheduling, payment, and the day of surgery. This discussion lasts about 15–25 minutes.

  • On the day of your appointment, you will be greeted at the front desk and escorted to the waiting room. There, you will fill out the necessary forms, including a consent form and a health questionnaire.

Next, a nurse will come to get you and help you prepare for the procedure. You’ll be assigned a bed and can change into your hospital gown. Before the surgery, you’ll discuss any final practical details with the nurse.

    Before the surgery

Before heading to the operating room, the treatment will be discussed once more with the plastic surgeon. The surgical area will be marked, and, if necessary, photos will be taken. At this time, you’ll also have the opportunity to ask questions.

If the procedure is performed under general anesthesia, the anesthesiologist will go over the questionnaire and the anesthesia with you beforehand. You will then be taken to the operating room.

    After the procedure

After the procedure, you’ll be taken to the recovery room or nursing ward. Here, you’ll wake up at your own pace, and a nurse will closely monitor your recovery. You’ll receive instructions on aftercare and what to expect at home.

Once you have recovered sufficiently, you may go home. For some treatments, you’ll stay at the clinic a little longer or may need to stay overnight. This depends on the procedure and will be discussed in advance.

    Good to Know

    • You’ll usually be told one day in advance what time you’re expected to arrive.

    • You are generally expected to arrive about 30 minutes before your treatment.

    • Please allow for some waiting time: the surgical schedule may run late.

    • How long you stay at the clinic after your treatment depends on the procedure.

  • After the treatment, you’ll receive clear instructions about aftercare and recovery. How long recovery takes and what to expect varies depending on the treatment and the individual.

For example, in the initial period, you may experience swelling, bruising, tenderness, or fatigue.

We’ll let you know what to expect during your recovery and when you can resume your daily activities, work, and exercise. During the follow-up appointments at 1 week and 3 months, we’ll closely monitor your recovery, and you’ll have the opportunity to ask any questions you may have.

Do you have any questions or concerns during your recovery? Feel free to contact us at any time.
