Evert-Jan ten Dam has worked as a plastic surgeon at Boerhaave Clinic since 2021. Before that, he worked at Alrijne Hospital and Leiden UMC. He studied Medicine at the University of Groningen.
During his medical studies, dr. ten Dam was introduced to winter sports for the first time. He went on his first ski holiday with the Faculty of Medicine. Since then he has enjoyed doing so every year, with friends or with his wife.
The Dolomites in Italy are his favourite destination: “This ski area has a lot to offer: good food, fantastic nature and slopes that aren’t too crowded.”
Are there certain treatments that are ideal in the winter in particular?
“In the winter period there are advantages to be found for almost all treatments,” says dr. ten Dam. “As well as treatments after which you have to wear compression garments, facial treatments are also very suitable in the winter, because the chance of UV burns is lower. In addition, swelling or scars are easy to hide in the winter, because there is less light and you wear more clothes. In terms of aftercare, there isn’t really any difference compared with the summer.”
What does winter mean to you?
“Actually, every season has something special. Winter is all about cosiness, winter sports and being outdoors,” says ten Dam. “December in itself is snug and cosy.”
What makes winter a suitable time for plastic surgery?
“An operation during the winter means you are ready for the summer. It is also pleasant to wear compression garments in the cold, dark days. You wear these garments after a tummy tuck or liposuction.”
What is your ultimate winter tip?
“As it happens, I have just come back from Bali. I visited beautiful places there, including Seminyak, Ubud, Sidemen and Nusa Lembongan. So my winter tip is to head to the sun for a while during the cold days too.”
What is your favourite winter anecdote or memory?
“In 2022 I organised Boerhaave’s first ski trip”. It took place in Austria. “It was a huge success with the team: great for team building, lots of fun and even a conga line.”
