Dr. Perry van der Heijden has been an ENT specialist at Boerhaave Clinic since 2021. Within Boerhaave he focuses mainly on ear and nose corrections. Since the start of his training as an ENT specialist, dr. Van der Heijden has been interested in the beauty of the face.
In his spare time, dr. van der Heijden is a very sporty person: from kitesurfing to skiing. “I ski a lot; I love going off-piste.” Perry describes it as a feeling of freedom, and that feeling is what he strives for. “Kitesurfing gives you the same feeling as powder skiing.”
Dr. van der Heijden loves a physical challenge, especially when he has to push himself that little bit further. “Pushing the limits of exhaustion, so that at the end of the day you can collapse feeling satisfied, that’s what I do it for.” One day dr. van der Heijden would love to go ski touring, a form of skiing that does not use ski lifts. Skiers climb the mountain with their skis on and then ski back down again.
What is your favourite winter anecdote or memory?
His love of skiing began at the age of 25. His first holiday with his wife was a skiing holiday: “I fell in love straight away, with both her and skiing.”
What does winter mean to you?
“I enjoy the change of seasons.” “The cold is nice, but it does have to be dry.” His love of snow comes from skiing and because he likes playing in/with snow. Ice skating, on the other hand, is not for Dr. van der Heijden.
Why does winter suit plastic surgery?
“The days are darker and quieter; you go outside a bit less. This gives you more time to rest indoors and recover.”
In your view, what makes winter a good time for certain cosmetic or plastic surgery treatments?
Nose and ear corrections are the treatments I perform most. These are very suitable to schedule in winter. “Especially ear corrections, because you can wear a hat more often and more easily.” “This keeps you warm and makes it less visible.”
The skin is often drier in winter.
Does this affect the recovery process after a treatment? Do you have a personal winter ritual or tip for keeping the skin healthy and glowing?
“I always advise keeping the skin well oiled in winter.” This is also important for scars.
With a nose correction, for example, Dr. Van der Heijden specifically advises also greasing the scars inside the nostrils, because these can crust more quickly. “A thin layer of Vaseline can already be very helpful.”
