Several news sites recently published an article about the growing number of people having eyelid corrections performed by GPs because of the lower costs. Although this may seem financially attractive, it is important to understand that such procedures are not without risk, especially when they are performed by doctors without specific training in plastic surgery.
An eyelid correction is a treatment in which excess skin and fat are removed from the eyelids for various reasons, for example to achieve an improved field of vision and/or to look less tired. Although the procedure seems relatively minor, it absolutely requires knowledge of the anatomy of the eyelid and extensive surgical skills to prevent complications and ensure optimal results.
The risks
The article emphasises that GPs are legally allowed to perform certain surgical procedures, such as eyelid corrections. However, GPs often lack the extensive training and experience that specialised plastic surgeons do have. This can lead to an increased risk of complications such as infections, asymmetry, excessive scarring and even damage to the eye.
Plastic surgeon is a protected title in Europe. The long training in which they are taught the various techniques exists for good reason. Anyone with a medical degree may call themselves a cosmetic doctor.
The advantage of specialisation
It is essential to choose a clinic that offers quality and safety. If in doubt about the doctor’s competence, it is advisable to check whether the surgeon is a member of the Netherlands Society for Plastic Surgery (NVPC). This offers an extra guarantee that the treating doctor has the necessary qualifications and experience.
Although price can be an important factor in the decision to undergo an eyelid correction, this must never be at the expense of your health and safety. A specialised clinic offers not only the expertise needed for a successful procedure, but also the reassurance that you are in good hands.
