Four reasons why people want a nose correction

Author:Boerhaave

At Boerhaave Clinic we have extensive experience in performing nose corrections (often also called rhinoplasty). With our team of ENT specialists and plastic surgeons, we perform nose corrections almost every day. The reasons why people want a nose correction vary widely, and it is by no means always because they are unhappy with the shape or size of their nose. We have listed for you the four most common reasons why our patients want a nose correction.

‘I am unhappy with my nose’

The best-known reason for having a nose correction is that people are unhappy with their nose. The nose as a whole may be considered too narrow or too wide. The nostrils may be too large or too narrow, or people may be unhappy with the position of the nasal tip. They see a nose correction as a way to boost their self-confidence and gain a more positive self-image. During an extensive consultation, our specialists find out where the problem lies.

‘I have breathing problems’

Struggling to breathe through your nose and suffering from chronic snoring can greatly affect your quality of life. It is therefore quite common for Boerhaave's surgeons to perform nose surgery to resolve a medical or breathing problem. Breathing problems can also arise after an aesthetic nose correction. They can be a consequence of the altered structure of the nose, which obstructs the nasal airways. A revision nose correction is then necessary to remove the cause of the obstruction.

‘My nose is damaged’

A third reason for having a nose correction is that the nose has been damaged. This may have happened, for example, as a result of cancer, a birth defect or an accident. Specialists then try to reconstruct the damaged nose using cartilage from the ear or rib and skin from other parts of the body.

‘I am unhappy with my first nose correction’

Like any procedure, surgery on the nose carries a risk. If a nose correction has failed, it can make the face look worse instead of better. Corrective surgery in the hands of an expert can fix the mistakes that were made. A so-called revision nose correction is a challenging operation in aesthetic plastic surgery. The more experience the plastic surgeon has, the greater the chance that the patient will be satisfied with the end result of the second nose correction. So always check your surgeon's references and only be treated by a surgeon who is experienced and has a good reputation.
