With summer on the horizon, everyone stands in front of the mirror at some point and asks themselves: “Do I feel comfortable in this body – in beachwear – on the beach?”. If your honest answer is “No”, you are in good company. The same answer applies to 78.4 per cent of women and 62.8 per cent of men. The online style guide Dresscode.nl arrived at these figures based on a survey of 1,438 Dutch men and women, all of whom were looking ahead to the 2017 beach season.
Although men are more positive about their bodies than women (and about women’s bodies too, incidentally), both groups name being overweight as the main reason for their insecurity. This probably explains why weight-loss programmes and cookbooks that promise a toned body do so well in the spring. Gyms are always busy in the run-up to the summer months, too.
Losing those excess pounds is indeed a good way to get your body ‘summer-ready’. But even those who manage to shed the pounds can still feel insecure about their body. After all, losing weight alone does not guarantee a toned stomach. Even people who eat healthily and exercise actively may find that some parts of the body do not respond in the way they would like. Liposuction of the stomach or legs can then offer a good solution to that problem.
A very popular procedure, especially in the period before summer, is liposuction of the stomach and legs. This improves the body’s contours by removing fat cells between the skin and the underlying muscles. It can be combined with lipofilling if desired. In lipofilling, the fat cells harvested during liposuction are processed and used elsewhere in the body. This can be done, for example, to fill wrinkles, but also to give the breasts or buttocks a more attractive appearance. Because removing excess fat from the stomach does not automatically result in a firm, flat stomach, a tummy tuck is in some cases a welcome addition to liposuction. This procedure is also suitable for women who find after pregnancy that it is difficult to get their stomach nicely toned again.
A somewhat more extensive treatment is the mommy makeover. This treatment, which originated in the United States, uses a combination of surgical procedures for women, such as correcting the breasts, stomach, hips and thighs. Other treatments that can enhance your appearance are the arm, thigh or buttock lift. And not forgetting, of course, permanent hair removal, a treatment that has been enormously popular among both men and women for years.
With the right treatment, nothing stands in the way of you looking in the mirror with confidence and saying: I am ready for summer. Do bear two things in mind, though. Firstly, liposuction of the stomach is not intended for losing weight, but for achieving a beautiful stomach contour. A plastic surgeon who works responsibly will always advise you to lose weight first if you are overweight. And secondly, it is good to remember that you are lying on the beach mainly for your own enjoyment. If someone else looks at you approvingly, that is a welcome compliment. But at the end of the day, you are the one who needs to be happy with your body.
