How old do you have to be for cosmetic surgery?

Cosmetic surgery: how old do you have to be? We are often asked this question by phone or email. Sometimes by mothers who are worried about their daughter’s or son’s pronounced preoccupation with their appearance. And in other cases, the question comes directly from these young people themselves. Young people who are extremely insecure about their breasts, nose or labia, or who want fat suctioned away because they think they are too fat.

A compelling beauty ideal

Boerhaave Clinic takes its responsibility in this. It is our task to strike a careful balance between the request of the person sitting opposite us in the consulting room and the demands that today’s beauty standards impose on people. Before we decide whether or not to meet a client’s wishes through a procedure, we must be clear whether those wishes truly come from the client themselves, or are being wrongly fed by what the compelling beauty ideal (or their partner) whispers to them.

Cosmetic surgery to “fit in”

For people who are not yet adults, this consideration is all the more important. Young people are under enormous pressure to conform to the group they belong to or want to belong to, and this makes them relatively easy to influence. There is a real danger that a girl in the consulting room who wants a breast augmentation, nose correction, liposuction or a labia reduction does not actually want to undergo this procedure at all, but is afraid she will not “fit in” if she does not.

Minimum age of eighteen

Boerhaave Clinic therefore, like the Dutch Society for Plastic Surgery, applies a minimum age of eighteen.

Cosmetic surgery is not about “fitting in” but about being happy with your own body. The body of someone who is not yet an adult has not yet finished growing. Nor has the mind of someone who is not yet an adult. Dissatisfaction with one’s own young body can be a phase that passes when adulthood arrives and love, work and family start to play a serious role in someone’s life. But if the wish remains, our doors are open 365 days a year to inform you free of charge and without obligation.
