Doctor Popko-Zagor, welcome to Boerhaave! Could you briefly tell us who you are?
“Who am I? First of all, I am a doctor, a woman, a mother and a true globetrotter. I have worked in various countries and gained valuable experience, including in Germany, Austria, Switzerland, America, the Netherlands and of course Poland. I am genuinely interested in people and perhaps a bit of a perfectionist. For patients that is an advantage; for myself it is sometimes a challenge. “My goal is simple: I want to make every patient happy.”
Where did the wish to become an ENT specialist come from?
“Why did I want to become an ENT specialist? I have always been fascinated by noses, even as a child. Both my parents are doctors and my mother is also an ENT specialist, so I was inspired by the profession from an early age. Some 23 years ago I started scientific research into the nose, and the subject has never let go of me since. I can talk about it for hours. Every nose is different, and it is precisely that variety that makes it so special and challenging for me.”
So how did you end up in the Netherlands?
“Why do I now work in the Netherlands? The short answer, and perhaps a bit of a cliché, is: for love.”
What can patients come to you for? And where can we find you?
“For anything to do with the nose. And you will mainly find me at the clinic in Utrecht on Wednesdays.”
What do you most like to do in your spare time?
“In my spare time I mainly enjoy spending time with my family: going for walks together, having a good chat or going out for a nice meal. I also love dancing, horse riding and I have a great interest in art and design.”
Do you have any favourite habits or music in the operating theatre?
“I don’t have any special habits in the operating theatre; I like to work in a structured way and prefer calm during an operation. There is music on, though, pop music for example. My favourite? Lady Gaga!”
Is there anything else you would like to tell our readers?
“Always take the time to make decisions calmly. Always try to find some calm when you are thinking something over; that helps you make the best choices.”
