Is the new man going for plastic surgery? According to American statistics, he is. Since 1997, the number of men there having cosmetic procedures has risen by no less than 325 percent.
Are you, the reader of this text, a man? Then admit it: you enjoy looking at a woman who looks her best. Are you a woman? Then admit it too: you like it when a glance in the mirror pays you a compliment. Eyes that look out at the world with pleasure, a radiant smile, beautiful flawless skin. It is no coincidence that of the ten plastic surgery procedures most desired by women, four relate to the face (botox, fillers, eyelid correction and nose correction). All procedures that can give a woman's natural beauty just that little bit of extra emphasis.
But is it any different for men? Do all men themselves believe their so eagerly voiced “Men only get better-looking as they get older”? Don't believe it. Men are finding their way to the beauty product shelves at the chemist more and more. And not only that: following women, men are now also very quickly losing their reluctance to give their appearance a nudge in the right direction through treatment by a plastic surgeon. Plastic surgery is now hot among men too. And why not? A man also wants to feel good when he looks in the mirror. And a man, too, will appreciate a compliment about his appearance. As is often the case with plastic surgery, this development started in the United States. The most popular non-surgical procedure among men is the use of injectables. But liposuction, nose correction, eyelid correction, breast reduction (gynaecomastia) and facelifts also score well.
At the moment, men are still far from catching up with women. Of all people who use plastic surgery, fewer than a quarter are currently men. But men are clearly finding their way to the plastic surgeon more and more. So forget the hipster, the Tarzan, the Don Juan, the muscleman, the metrosexual and all those other types of men that women's magazines write about so eagerly. The new man is simply a man who wants to look good. Can you blame him?
