For many women, labia correction is a procedure they still find it difficult to open up about. That is a pity, because it is a procedure that has been performed with great success for many years and that many women are extremely satisfied with. For many of these women, that satisfaction has to do with the fact that, before the procedure, they were ashamed of the shape and size of their outer labia.
But for many of these women, that satisfaction can also be explained by the fact that inner labia that were too large caused discomfort and even pain during sex or during everyday activities such as cycling or horse riding. The issue is usually that the inner labia protrude a few centimetres beyond the outer labia. In some women this is naturally the case, but the problem can also arise as a result of ageing or one or more pregnancies. A labia correction is then a logical treatment that solves the problem completely.
Do bear in mind, however, that the aim is not to pursue perfection. The plastic surgeon you consult will always ask you what your expectations are, in order to get a good picture of how realistic they are. The basic principle of a labia correction is to remove the part of the long inner (or minor) labia that visibly hangs down when you are standing. In addition to inner labia that are too large, women may also be bothered by outer labia that are too large, too much skin of the “hood” and a raised mons pubis. Together with the plastic surgeon, you therefore decide which procedure is used and how much tissue needs to be removed to achieve the result you want. Depending on the type, the procedure itself is relatively minor: it takes thirty minutes on average and can be carried out under local anaesthesia. The recovery time is limited. Within seven to fourteen days after the procedure, you can once again feel free to have sex with your partner or visit the sauna.
In some cases, the plastic surgeon will recommend combining the labia correction with a so-called hood plasty. The “hood” is the small cap of skin that covers the clitoris. In itself it is important that this hood is there, as it has an important protective function for the clitoris. But some women have excessive tissue development.
In a hood plasty, the excess tissue is removed. This makes the external part of your clitoris more accessible. Many women who have already undergone this procedure say they are very satisfied with the result.
Making a first consultation appointment for a labia correction is quite a big step. We understand that. That is why your consultation at Boerhaave Clinic will always take place with the plastic surgeon who will also perform your treatment. The consultation will also always take place at the location where you will be treated. This means that at your very first consultation you will already be familiar with your surgeon, your treatment location and the consultant who will guide you.
