Liposuction popular with both women and men

Liposuction is popular with both women and men in the 35 – 64 age group. This is shown by recent research by The American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery (ASAPS). In 2016, liposuction was the most popular plastic surgery treatment for both American women and men. With more than 414,000 treatments, liposuction is firmly in first place in the top five of cosmetic surgery.

Four times in a row

This year, the treatment is in first place in the American top 5 for the fourth time in a row. In the Netherlands, too, this treatment has been the operation most frequently performed by plastic surgeons for several years in a row. Since 1997, when ASAPS began its measurements, the number of liposuction treatments has risen by no less than 134%. This increase is smaller than the increase in breast lifts (712%) and tummy tucks (434%) over the past 20 years.

A relatively safe form of plastic surgery

Having fat cells removed, also known as liposuction, creates a more attractive body contour and is a relatively safe and easy procedure. The scars are minimal and, depending on the extent, the operation can be performed under local anaesthesia. Getting a slimmer body and the low risks involved make this treatment popular among Americans.

Reasons to choose liposuction

The most common considerations for having liposuction are:
– ‘My clothes no longer fit properly.’
– ‘I want my body to look a bit firmer.’
– ‘Liposuction leaves smaller scars than other treatments to improve my body contour.’
– ‘The operation is very short compared with other operations, so the risks are lower.’

Other popular plastic surgery procedures

Besides liposuction, the tummy tuck and the buttock lift also rose in popularity last year. For example, 172,000 American women had a tummy tuck. And the number of buttock lift treatments rose by more than 20%. The latter treatment is particularly popular among women; only 3.7% of the treatments were performed on men.
