New research: no link found between silicone breast implants and breast implant illness.

If you are considering having breast implants placed, questions often arise about safety and possible long-term complaints. A much-discussed topic is Breast Implant Illness (BII), an umbrella term for a range of health complaints that some women experience after having silicone breast implants placed. Recent research by the Antoni van Leeuwenhoek hospital shows that no link has been found between silicone breast implants and Breast Implant Illness (BII).

What is Breast Implant Illness (BII)?
Breast Implant Illness is not an official medical diagnosis, but a term used for complaints such as fatigue, muscle and joint pain, low mood, hair loss and headaches. These complaints can sometimes arise years after implants have been placed. To date, no clear medical explanation for these complaints has been found.

The research
The Antoni van Leeuwenhoek investigated whether there is a link between silicone breast implants and these complaints. More than 6,000 women who had previously had breast cancer took part in the study. Some of them had breast implants, others did not.

The results show that women with and without silicone breast implants experience health complaints equally often. According to the researchers, this means that silicone implants are probably not the cause of these complaints. The complaints seem more often to be part of general health problems that also occur in women without implants or without breast cancer.

What does this mean for you?
The researchers hope that their results will reassure women who have or are considering a breast implant. It does not mean that complaints should not be taken seriously, but it does indicate that silicone implants are probably not the culprit. It always remains important to consult a doctor if you have complaints, so that other causes can be investigated.
