What types of facelifts are there?
Discover the different types of facelifts, from the S-lift to the combined neck and facelift, and what you can expect from each procedure.

You hear about them more and more often. A plastic surgeon and a cosmetic doctor. But what is actually the difference between them? This is a question we are often asked by our patients, and it is important to understand the distinction so that you can make the right choice for your needs.
Plastic surgeon
A plastic surgeon is a doctor who has completed extensive, specialised training. After a 6-year degree in Medicine, you follow specialist training to become a plastic surgeon, which also takes 6 years and consists of two years of preliminary training in general surgery and four years of further training in plastic surgery. This training focuses on restoring the form and function of the body after illness, trauma or congenital abnormalities, but also on surgical aesthetics.
At Boerhaave Clinic, our plastic surgeons perform aesthetic surgical procedures such as facelifts, breast augmentations and liposuction. In addition, a plastic surgeon is always a member of the Nederlandse Vereniging voor Plastische Chirurgie (NVPC, the Dutch Society for Plastic Surgery). This offers an extra guarantee that the treating doctor has the necessary qualifications and experience.
Cosmetic doctor
A cosmetic doctor focuses exclusively on aesthetic treatments that are non-surgical. These doctors have completed a basic degree in medicine, but then specialise in cosmetic medicine through courses and training. A cosmetic doctor performs treatments such as injectables, laser treatments and skin improvements, for example.
Which specialist do you choose?
The choice between a plastic surgeon and a cosmetic doctor depends on your specific needs and wishes. At Boerhaave, we can help you with plastic surgery procedures on the body, face or breasts. We work with the best plastic surgeons to offer you a wide range of options. We always start with a free consultation with a plastic surgeon to discuss your goals and advise you on the best approach. This way we make sure you get the treatment that suits you perfectly.
