Plastic surgery has become an established part of our society. In the most recent year measured (2013), doctors performed eleven million surgical and non-surgical cosmetic procedures. Popular surgical procedures are liposuction and breast augmentation. Among non-surgical treatments, Botox treatment scores particularly well. The number of people who consider a cosmetic procedure entirely acceptable is growing fast. But the questions remain. That is why we have listed a few questions and answers.
This is not an easy question to answer. This is because not all clinics have the same qualifications and not all hospitals have the most experienced plastic surgeons for the treatment you want. When you are considering a treatment, you rightly want to be in the most qualified hands and in the safest possible hospital environment. Boerhaave Clinic gives you the best of both worlds. The ideal combination. Boerhaave Clinic has experienced plastic surgeons and a complete operating complex that meets all requirements. For example, we have two Class I operating theatres. Only in this type of operating theatre may breast implants be inserted, because of the plenum (a special extraction system).
Unfortunately not. Surgical procedures require an incision in the skin. But a plastic surgeon deliberately works in such a way that the scar is minimally visible. For example, he can make the incision in a skin fold, so that it is minimally visible. Moreover, he will close the wound carefully and give targeted advice on wound healing.
It is not necessary to avoid exposure to the sun completely, but your plastic surgeon will give you guidelines. Excessive exposure to the sun can delay wound healing and can cause a shift in pigmentation, making scars more noticeable and visible for longer. Good sun protection above factor 30 is certainly advisable when the scar is exposed to light.
Cosmetic surgery is what is known as elective surgery: there is no medical need for it. So health insurers do not reimburse it. But costs are not the only thing you should consider when thinking about cosmetic surgery. A good doctor will always ask you what your expectations are, because he wants to be sure they are realistic. It is not the intention that a woman has a breast augmentation because her husband wants it, or that a girl has a nose correction expecting that suddenly all the boys will want to go out with her. Cosmetic surgery enhances, but you remain the same person. The treatment must have value for you yourself.
Every surgical procedure carries a certain risk, but this risk is no greater with cosmetic surgery than with other procedures. To some extent, you yourself have control over how great the risk of problems is, by always asking in detail about the experience of the person you want to carry out the treatment and about the conditions under which you will be operated on
