Plastic surgery more popular than ever

Plastic surgery more popular than ever

It is hard to imagine now, because plastic surgery is more popular than ever these days, but there was a time when aesthetic plastic surgery was completely not done . You were not even allowed to talk about it. And if you had “had something done”, you had better keep quiet about it, or everyone would look down on you.

These days we are much more willing to say that we have “had something done”

Of course, there are still people who prefer to keep quiet when confronted with an overly direct question. We learned this from TV presenter Sophie Hilbrand, who for her programme Sophie in de kreukels interviewed people known from radio and TV. Only a handful dared to admit openly that they had ever used a little Botox or other aids.

In ordinary people’s lives, things are different. These days we are much more willing to say that we have “had something done”. And partly for that reason, aesthetic plastic surgery is more popular than ever. Botox or fillers? A breast augmentation? A tummy tuck? A facelift? We dare to go for it. Although hard figures for the Netherlands are lacking, it is clear that our country is also following in the footsteps of the United States.

Plastic surgery to stay attractive and competitive in the workplace.

Last year, for the first time, Americans spent more than 13.5 billion dollars on aesthetic plastic surgery:

  • 58 per cent of it on surgical procedures and
  • 42 per cent on non-surgical procedures.

Jamer Grotting, president of ASAPS, the American society for aesthetic plastic surgery, calls the growth ‘considerable but not surprising’. He explains: ‘It is a reflection of a healthy and robust economy in which people are willing and able to invest in themselves’. As an important reason for doing so, he cites staying attractive and competitive in the workplace. A business reason, then: it is not just about outward beauty, but above all about what it symbolises in the professional world. It is therefore not surprising that injectables and other procedures that enhance the face are extremely popular.

Choosing a plastic surgeon who is a member of the NVPC means choosing good-quality advice and treatment.

Thanks to the presence of ASAPS in the US, strict quality rules for aesthetic plastic surgery exist in that country. The society is still primarily focused on the purpose for which it was founded in 1967: providing focused and reliable training. Over the years, a second, equally important task has been added: scientific research as the basis for quality improvement in aesthetic plastic surgery. The Dutch Society for Plastic Surgery is set up on the same model. Clients who choose a plastic surgeon who is a member of the NVPC are guaranteed good quality in the advice and treatment they receive.
