The best breast augmentation – isn’t that what you are looking for too? If you are considering a breast augmentation, you will be looking for the best breast augmentation. But what are beautiful breasts? When can you say that a woman has the ideal breasts?

You would think: that just depends on who you ask. Everyone has their own taste, after all. Yet there turns out to be a clear common denominator in the answer, as plastic surgeons Olivier Branford and Patrick Mallucci discovered. They put the question to a panel of 1,315 people, both men and women, all of different ages and ethnic backgrounds. And the result: ninety per cent of the men and 82 per cent of the women came to exactly the same conclusion.
Branford and Mallucci used mathematics to arrive at the answer to the question: what does the best breast augmentation look like? That may sound a little strange, because what someone finds beautiful is a matter of emotion. Yet what the two did is logical, and the answer to the question of beauty can be rationalised. The key lies in the percentage of breast tissue above and below the nipple. The plastic surgeons showed the 1,315 participants in the study images of breasts with different ratios of tissue above and below the nipple:

Ratios studied for the best breast augmentation

  • 35% : 65 %,
  • 45% : 55 %,
  • 50% : 50% and
  • 55% : 45 %

Almost everyone (90% of men and 82% of women, that is) found the 45:55 ratio the most beautiful. So men prefer the natural shape. This is very striking, because it is often assumed that men go for “round” breasts. In short: the best breast augmentation is one with a natural appearance, created by having slightly more tissue below the nipple than above it. So not a round shape, such as is created with round breast implants. But not a larger amount of tissue below the nipple either, because that gives the appearance of a sagging breast. “Our findings show that the same ratio is universally preferred, regardless of actual breast size,” said Dr Mallucci in a recent interview. They carried out the test with smaller, medium-sized and large breasts.

Men and women prefer a natural breast

Both men and women therefore prefer a breast with a natural shape. In a publication in the authoritative professional journal Journal of the American Society of Plastic Surgeons Branford and Mallucci say about this: “This is in stark contrast to previous misplaced assumptions that men prefer very large or ‘fake’ breasts, a view long perpetuated as a cliché interpretation of male preference.”

Based on this research, the “best breast augmentation” has the following characteristics:

  • 45 per cent of the volume in the upper part of the breast (upper pole) (U)
  • 55 per cent of the volume in the lower pole (L)
  • A nipple that sits just above the middle of the breast and points slightly upwards (NM)
  • A straight / mildly concave slope of the upper pole (UPS)
  • A convex, smooth lower pole (LPC)

So that cliché can go in the bin. And that is good news for plastic surgeons and for women considering a breast augmentation. By knowing more precisely what women want, plastic surgeons can tailor the result of the treatment even better to the woman’s wishes. And for the woman, it means she no longer has to give in to the temptation of letting the cliché of ‘big is beautiful’ guide her choice of breast implants. It is precisely the natural beauty of the female breast that almost everyone finds so attractive.
