Although we Dutch are known as a down-to-earth people, we naturally still want to look good. This explains why every year we make New Year’s resolutions (with losing weight invariably at number one), why in spring we spend a fortune on new clothes, and why we take out a gym membership again as summer approaches. By February we have already forgotten those good intentions from January. The clothes we buy in spring can be loose enough to pleasantly conceal our figure in the spring sunshine on the terrace. But summer is a real problem, because on the beach the clothes come off and there is little left to hide.
So what can you do to look attractive anyway? The Americans know. They simply go to the plastic surgeon, and how. They spent more than twelve billion dollars on it in 2014, just as they did in 2013. A striking development here is that men, too, are increasingly finding their way to plastic surgery. In the last five years, American men have made 43 per cent more use of surgical and non-surgical procedures to enhance their bodies. At the same time, American women are not holding back either, because they too still know the way to their favourite plastic surgeon very well.
And what is at number one among surgical procedures for both men and women? You guessed it: liposuction. Men and women both think it is important to be able to walk into the beach bar confidently in swimming trunks or a bikini. Breast augmentation also remains immensely popular, especially among women, although men are also starting to recognise its possibilities. The share of breast correction for men (gynaecomastia) in the US grew by 33 per cent over the last five years. In addition, eyelid correction, tummy tuck and nose correction continue to do well among surgical procedures.
Among non-surgical procedures, temporary skin treatments in particular score well: Botox and hyaluronic acid. Hair removal also remains popular. And just as with liposuction and other surgical procedures, this popularity of non-surgical enhancements applies to both men and women. So women heading to the beach this summer know what to expect: the handsome man is on his way.
