About MIA Femtech breast augmentation

MIA Femtech is a minimally invasive breast augmentation procedure in which special implants are inserted through a small incision in the armpit. The breasts typically increase by one to two cup sizes, with no scar on the breast itself. Because muscles, nerves, and blood vessels remain intact as much as possible, recovery time is shorter than with traditional breast augmentation.

  • A MIA Femtech breast enhancement costs €8,000. During a free, no-obligation consultation, the plastic surgeon discusses your wishes and assesses whether this technique suits your body and the desired result. You then receive a transparent cost overview and extensive information about the treatment.
  • With MIA Femtech, the implants are placed through a small incision in the armpit and the procedure takes place under local anaesthesia. As a result, there is no scar on the breast itself. The technique is aimed at a subtle enlargement of usually one to two cup sizes and a shorter recovery time than with a traditional breast augmentation.
  • The recovery time after a MIA Femtech breast enhancement is short. Many patients can quickly resume their daily activities and experience relatively little discomfort. Heavy physical exertion and intensive exercise are not recommended in the initial period. It may take a few weeks for the swelling to disappear completely and for the result to become clearly visible.
  • At Boerhaave, MIA Femtech breast enhancement is performed by experienced plastic surgeons with an eye for safety, quality and a natural result. You can count on high-quality implants, personal guidance and extensive aftercare, so that you know where you stand throughout the entire treatment process.

Here's how the treatment works

Here you will find all the important information about this treatment, from the consultation and the treatment itself to follow-up care, the results, and potential risks.

  • MIA Femtech is an advanced breast augmentation technique known for its quick recovery time and use of local anesthesia. The procedure itself takes about one hour and is performed through a small incision in the armpit, leaving no visible scars on the breast itself.

The procedure uses local anesthesia, which means the patient remains awake and does not require general anesthesia. This reduces the risks associated with general anesthesia, such as complications during surgery, and speeds up recovery time.

As for recovery, most patients experience little to no discomfort after the surgery and can resume their daily activities within a few hours. Since the procedure is minimally invasive, patients do not need to follow extensive postoperative care protocols, and no drains are required. The majority of patients experience little to no pain and can return to their normal routine almost immediately after the procedure.

The technique offers a faster recovery time than traditional breast augmentation, which often requires several days of rest. With MIA Femtech, the recovery time is significantly shorter, making it ideal for women with busy lifestyles who want to return to their normal activities quickly.

    When is this method suitable?
Skin elasticity is a key factor in determining suitability for MIA Femtech. Women with good skin elasticity will typically experience better results, as the skin can better adapt to the new shape of the breast after implant placement.

For women with less elastic skin—for example, due to aging, pregnancy, or weight loss—the technique may still be suitable, but the results may be less than optimal. In such cases, a surgeon may recommend considering a different typeof breast augmentation or additional techniques to achieve the best result.

It is important for women with less elastic skin to discuss this during the consultation so that the surgeon can determine the best approach based on their unique situation.

  • Plastic Surgeon
The consultation always takes place with the plastic surgeon who will be treating you. During this initial consultation, you can discuss your goals regarding breast augmentation. Your plastic surgeon will answer your initial questions and review your medical history with you. The plastic surgeon will then assess whether your expectations, desired results, and suitability for the procedure are feasible.

The surgeon will examine your breasts, assessing skin elasticity and breast anatomy. This helps the doctor determine which type of implant is best suited for you and ensures that the procedure is safe and effective. It’s also an opportunity for you to ask questions about the process, recovery time, potential risks, and aftercare.

You will receive an explanation of the MIA Femtech technology used, the benefits of the minimally invasive technique, and how the procedure differs from traditional breast augmentation. The doctor will also discuss expectations regarding the results, including the size of the implants and the natural appearance that can be achieved.

    Consultant
Following your initial consultation with your plastic surgeon, you will have a (telephone) conversation with your consultant. The purpose of this conversation is to inform you about matters that need to be arranged prior to your treatment. You can read more information here about your consultation at Boerhaave.

  • The MIA Femtech breast augmentation is a relatively quick and minimally invasive procedure designed to enlarge the breasts with little recovery time and minimal scarring. Here is an overview of how the treatment works:

    Local Anesthesia
The procedure is performed under local anesthesia, which means you remain awake, but your breasts and the surrounding areas are numbed. This reduces the risks associated with general anesthesia and makes the procedure less stressful.

    Incision
Instead of the larger incisions used in traditional breast augmentation procedures, with MIA Femtech the surgeon makes a small incision in the armpit, usually no larger than a few millimeters. This small incision allows the implant to be inserted without leaving visible scars on the breast itself.

    Implant Placement
A special implant is inserted into the breast through the small incision. The implants used at MIA Femtech are often oval in shape and smaller than traditional implants, resulting in a more natural-looking outcome.

    Completion
Once the implant is in place, the incision is closed with a few stitches that will dissolve on their own or can be easily removed later. Because no large incision is required, the risk of complications such as infections or visible scars is low.

  • After MIA Femtech breast augmentation, post-operative care is relatively simple, and recovery is often quick and complication-free, as described at . Here is an overview of post-operative care and the recovery process:

    Immediately after the procedure
Because MIA Femtech is a minimally invasive technique, most patients experience little to no pain. No drains are needed. The procedure is performed under local anesthesia, so you remain awake and can often go home shortly after surgery. Immediately after the procedure, there may be slight swelling or a feeling of pressure, but these usually subside quickly.

    Activities after the procedure
Patients can often resume their normal activities within a few hours. However, it is advisable to avoid strenuous physical activity, such as intense exercise or heavy lifting, for the first few days or weeks to support recovery. Most patients can resume work or their daily routine almost immediately.

    Recovery time
Recovery from MIA Femtech is faster than with traditional breast augmentation. Most patients experience little discomfort after the procedure and have only a short recovery time. After a few days, most women can fully resume their daily activities. It usually takes a few weeks for all swelling to subside.

    Aftercare
Although the recovery period is short, it is recommended to sleep in a supportive bra during the first few weeks to support the breasts. It is also important to keep the treated areas clean and dry, especially the small incision sites. In most cases, no special medications are needed.

    Scar Cream
During your first follow-up visit, you’ll be given a scar care cream to take home. Once the wound has closed and the scabs have fallen off, you may begin applying the scar cream. Applying this to the closed wound twice a day increases the likelihood of a smooth healing process.

Recovery after the MIA Femtech procedure is typically quick and without major complications, making it a popular choice for women who want to return to their daily lives quickly without long-term limitations.

  • The results of a MIA Femtech breast augmentation are typically very natural and proportionate, with a subtle increase in breast size—usually one to two cup sizes larger. The implants used are oval in shape and designed to provide natural projection, resulting in an aesthetically pleasing and soft shape that complements the body’s proportions.

Since the incision is small and discreet, located in the armpit, there are no visible scars on the breast itself, which contributes to the natural-looking result.

This technique allows for a minimal recovery period, enabling women to be satisfied with the results quickly—often within a few weeks after the procedure.

However, the result depends heavily on the patient’s individual anatomy and expectations. During the consultation, the doctor will discuss the desired size and natural appearance to ensure the result aligns well with the patient’s personal preferences.

  • It is important to realize that any surgical procedure can involve risks and complications. This also applies to breast augmentation. The risks and complications associated with this procedure are minimal, as it is generally performed on healthy individuals. Through thorough counseling, a comprehensive medical history (including details such as medication use, any issues with previous surgeries, and allergies), and our professional approach, we minimize these risks to an absolute minimum. You can also minimize the risk of complications by carefully following the instructions you received prior to your breast augmentation.

    Possible complications include:

    • Hematoma (a collection of blood under the skin that requires drainage)
    • Adverse reaction to the anesthesia
    • Postoperative bleeding
    • Infection
    • Capsular contracture
    • Implant rupture
    • Displacement or rotation of the implant
    • Wrinkling and folding of the implant
    • Change in sensation
    • Tissue breakdown
    • Permanent unsightly scars
    • Allergic reaction to suture material and/or bandages
    • Damage to underlying structures
    • Unsatisfactory aesthetic result
    • ALCL

Every year, many people undergo successful breast augmentation surgery at Boerhaave. The likelihood of a complication occurring is very rare.

    Capsular Contracture
After breast augmentation, scar tissue that forms around the implants can cause the breast to feel tighter, firmer, and painful. Excessive firmness can occur soon after surgery, but it can also develop years later. It is impossible to predict, but the risk of tightening does increase over time. After 10 years, the incidence rate is 10 to 12 percent. This condition, known as capsular contracture, can occur on one side or both sides and is more common when the implant is placed in front of the pectoral muscle. It is possible to treat capsular contracture through surgery or by replacing or removing the implant. However, capsular contracture may recur after surgery.

    Smoking
Patients who smoke or use tobacco or nicotine products before and/or after treatment are at greater risk of complications, such as skin necrosis and impaired wound healing. People exposed to secondhand smoke may also be at increased risk of similar complications. Furthermore, smoking can have a negative effect on anesthesia, potentially resulting in an increased risk of bleeding. It is important to refrain from smoking for at least four weeks before treatment and throughout the entire recovery process.

People who are not exposed to tobacco smoke or nicotine products have a significantly lower risk of such complications.
