About a chin correction
| A chin correction procedure adjusts the shape and size of your chin using a chin implant. This can help bring a receding or small chin into better balance with the rest of your face and enhance your jawline. At Boerhaave, you’ll work with a specialized ENT surgeon to determine which implant best suits your facial profile and preferences. |
- A chin correction with an implant costs €3,000. During a free, no-obligation consultation, the ENT specialist discusses your wishes and assesses your facial profile, and we look at which shape and size of implant suit you best. You then receive a personal treatment plan with a transparent cost overview.
- In a chin correction, the ENT specialist places the implant through a small incision of about 1.5 to 2 centimetres in the natural crease under the chin. As a result, the scar is usually barely visible after recovery. Boerhaave does not place the implant through the inside of the mouth, because of the greater risk of infection with this method.
- After a chin correction, swelling and discolouration may occur. The stitches and plaster dressing are removed after about a week, and most patients can then resume their daily activities. Heavy physical exertion is not recommended for the first three weeks, and sport for six weeks. The final result becomes visible once the swelling has fully subsided.
- At Boerhaave, chin corrections are carried out by experienced ENT specialists with an eye for safety, quality and a natural result. You can count on personal guidance and comprehensive aftercare, so that you know where you stand throughout the entire treatment process.
Here's how the treatment works
Here you'll find all the important information about this treatment, from the consultation and the treatment itself to follow-up care, the results, and potential risks.
A chin correction is often performed on people with a receding chin. This is a very distinctive facial feature. A chin correction can therefore give someone a completely different appearance. In men, a strong chin is associated with masculinity. For women, a chin correction can enhance the harmony of the face and, consequently, her natural beauty. Although it is a relatively minor procedure, it can yield significant results.
Sometimes, either on its own or in combination with a rhinoplasty, a correction of a chin that is set too far back is recommended. Such a recommendation stems from the fact that the nose is not an isolated feature, but part of the face as a whole. It is therefore important to determine how to create the best possible harmony among the various facial features.
Chin Implant
Chin implants come in various shapes and sizes. With a custom-made chin implant, you can achieve the jawline you’ve always wanted. The silicone implant is manufactured by Implantech.
Specialist in Aesthetic ENT
The consultation always takes place with the doctor who will be treating you. The first consultation is an opportunity to get to know the doctor and learn more about the treatment and the process. The doctor will discuss your specific wishes, expectations, and the reason why you are considering chin correction. You’ll also have time to ask the doctor any questions you may have. The doctor will then recommend the best treatment option based on your wishes and the results you hope to achieve. The doctor will also review your medical history with you. Next, photos will be taken for your medical record, and the doctor will examine your chin.
To examine your chin, the doctor will focus primarily on your face. If the most prominent part of your chin is set back, a chin augmentation can help bring your face into better balance. A chin correction can be performed on its own or in conjunction with a rhinoplasty.
Afterward, your consultation will be summarized in a treatment plan, and the total costs will be discussed. During the consultation, you’ll receive honest advice and be fully informed about the treatment, as well as pre- and post-operative care.
Consultant
Following your initial consultation with your doctor, you will have a (telephone) conversation with your consultant. During this conversation, you will be informed about practical matters regarding the chin correction. You are expected to arrive at the Boerhaave Clinic half an hour before your procedure. The procedure will be performed under local or general anesthesia.
Please note that you may go home the same day. You may go home after the ENT doctor has examined you and you are feeling well.
- The First Few Days After a Chin Correction
After the surgery, you will be prescribed a course of antibiotics to prevent possible infections. Part of your lower lip may be temporarily numb because the nerve is slightly swollen. This will resolve on its own. Some discoloration may be visible for seven to ten days. The stitches and bandage will be removed after one week.
Most patients can resume their daily activities after seven days. Strenuous physical activity is not recommended until three weeks have passed, and sports can be resumed after a six-week recovery period.
Further Recovery
The final result of the chin correction will only be clearly visible once the swelling has completely subsided. Keep in mind that this can take at least a month. After the recovery period, it will be possible to accurately assess what the final result will look like.Scar Cream
During your first follow-up visit, you’ll receive a nourishing cream for the scars. As soon as the wound has closed and the scabs have fallen off, you may begin applying the scar cream. Applying this to the closed wound twice a day will increase the likelihood of a good healing outcome. It is important to realize that any surgical procedure can involve risks and complications. Plastic surgery generally involves healthy individuals, and the risks are minimal. By listening to your story, conducting a thorough physical examination, providing accurate information, and following our professional approach, we reduce these risks to an absolute minimum. In addition, you can help minimize certain risks by carefully following the instructions you have been given.
Some possible complications may include:
- Infection
- Impaired wound healing
- Postoperative bleeding
- Implant displacement
- Capsule formation around the implant
- Persistent numbness in the lip
- Muscle weakness around the mouth
Smoking
Patients who smoke or use tobacco or nicotine products prior to treatment are at a higher risk of complications. It can also have a negative effect on anesthesia, potentially resulting in an increased risk of bleeding. It is important to refrain from smoking for at least four weeks before treatment and to continue abstaining throughout the entire recovery process.People who are not exposed to tobacco smoke or nicotine products have a lower risk of such complications.
