About lip correction
| Lip surgery can permanently alter the shape or size of your lips. At Boerhaave, procedures such as a lip lift and lip reduction are available. A lip lift reveals more of the red part of the lips, making the upper lip appear fuller. A lip reduction, on the other hand, involves removing excess lip tissue. The plastic surgeon will discuss which treatment best suits your needs. |
- A lip correction is possible from €1,200 for a reduction of the upper or lower lip. A lip lift costs €1,250 and a reduction of both the upper and lower lip €2,200. During a free, no-obligation consultation, the plastic surgeon will discuss your wishes and the options, and you will receive a transparent cost overview.
- A lip lift is a surgical procedure in which a small piece of skin is removed, so that more of the red part of the lip becomes visible and the lip looks fuller. The result is permanent. Fillers temporarily add volume with an injectable product. Which treatment suits you best depends on your lips, the desired result and your personal preference.
- A lip lift always leaves a scar. During recovery it gradually fades, but it may remain visible. It takes about one to one and a half years for a scar to settle completely. Good scar care and protection from the sun are important for the best possible healing.
- At Boerhaave, lip corrections are carried out by experienced plastic surgeons with an eye for safety, quality and a natural result. You can count on personal guidance and comprehensive aftercare, so that you know where you stand throughout the entire treatment process.
Here's how the treatment works
Here you will find all the important information about this treatment, from the consultation and the treatment itself to follow-up care, the results, and potential risks.
Plastic Surgeon
The consultation always takes place with the plastic surgeon who will be treating you.
During this consultation, you can discuss your wishes and expectations regarding the final result. The plastic surgeon will ask you a few medical questions and then examine your lips. In front of the mirror, you’ll have the opportunity to express your wishes, and the surgeon will let you know whether your expectations can be met.The entire process will take about 15–30 minutes.
Consultant
Following this, you’ll have another consultation with your consultant. You’ll then be informed about the general procedures that need to be arranged regarding your lip lift.Would you like to read more about your first consultation? More information.
A lip lift is always performed under local anesthesia. This means that, in most cases, you’ll be able to go home half an hour after the procedure.
To achieve your desired result, a small strip of skin is removed from your lip. This allows the skin and lip to be brought together and sutured. The area is then covered with a small band-aid.
Please keep in mind that the scar from the procedure may remain visible.
Once the anesthesia wears off, you may experience some discomfort—though it’s usually mild—in your lip. For the first few days, you may also feel a pulling sensation around your mouth. This is because the skin is still under tension.
One to two weeks after the lip lift, the treated area may still be red, swollen, and more sensitive—or, conversely, numb. These symptoms are nothing to worry about and will disappear after a few weeks. They are natural reactions as your body heals.
As you recover, you’ll notice that your scars gradually fade. Although they become less visible, they will still remain. It takes one to one and a half years for a scar to fully heal. That’s why it’s important to keep them out of the sun and take good care of them.
During your first follow-up visit at our clinic, you’ll receive a scar care cream to take home. Once the wound has closed and the scabs have fallen off, you can start applying the cream. By applying this to the closed wound twice a day, you’ll increase the chances of a smooth healing process.
The likelihood of risks and complications associated with a lip lift is rare. Nevertheless, it is important to realize that any surgical procedure can involve risks and complications.
Thanks to our thorough patient education, comprehensive medical history review, and professional approach, we minimize these risks to an absolute minimum. You can also help reduce certain risks by carefully following the instructions you have been given.
Possible complications may include:
- Hematoma (a collection of blood under the skin that requires drainage)
- Adverse reaction to the anesthesia
- Postoperative bleeding
- Infection
- Changes in sensation
- Permanent visible scars
- Damage to underlying structures
- Unsatisfactory aesthetic result.
Smoking
Patients who smoke or use tobacco or nicotine products at the time of surgery are at a higher risk of complications. For example, smoking can have a negative effect on anesthesia. Even if you are exposed to secondhand smoke, you may have an increased risk of complications.People who do not smoke and are not exposed to secondhand smoke have a significantly lower risk of complications.
