More about sagging skin

  • Loose skin can have various causes. The natural ageing process reduces the elasticity of the skin, making it less firm. Significant weight loss, pregnancy and a hereditary predisposition can also lead to excess or loose skin.

Loose skin can occur in various places, such as the abdomen, thighs and arms. After weight loss, for example, loose skin may remain on the abdomen, or slack skin on the legs, back or arms.

  • The right treatment depends on the amount of excess skin, its location and the elasticity of your skin. Where there is clear excess skin, a tummy tuck, thigh lift or armlift may be considered.

In an armlift, excess skin on the upper arms is removed. This can help with sagging arms, or what are also known as ‘bingo wings’. For excess skin on the legs, a thigh lift can help to tighten the contours of the legs.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • The choice between a tummy tuck and liposuction depends on your specific needs and expectations. If you mainly suffer from excess fat and your skin still has sufficient elasticity, liposuction can be a good solution. However, if you are dealing with a lot of excess skin and stretched muscles, a tummy tuck offers a better outcome.
  • In some cases, treatment to remove excess skin may be reimbursed by your health insurer. This depends on the medical necessity and the terms and conditions of your insurance. Reimbursement does not apply automatically.
  • After weight loss, the skin can partly adapt to the new body shape. However, when there is a lot of excess skin or the skin is not elastic enough, excess skin may remain. In that case, a body contouring procedure can help remove the excess skin.
  • With moderate sagging, only skin below the groin-buttock fold is removed, with a scar below the bikini line. With larger abnormalities (often after significant weight loss), skin and fat are removed over the entire length of the upper leg, with a vertical scar on the inner side; this is called an extended thigh lift.
  • Especially for people with excess skin on the back due to ageing, significant weight loss (for example after a diet or gastric reduction surgery) or reduced skin elasticity.
  • The classic armlift is suitable for moderate to excessive skin surplus. For excessive to severe skin surplus (for example after significant weight loss), the extended armlift offers a better result, with an additional scar in the armpit fold.
  • Not always. After weight loss, the skin can partly adapt to the new body shape. However, when there is a lot of excess skin or the skin is not elastic enough, it may continue to sag. A body contouring procedure can then help remove excess skin.
  • Before the operation, the surgeon marks out the treatment zones. During the operation, the surgeon removes the excess skin and lifts the buttocks. To remove the excess skin tissue, the plastic surgeon will make an incision above your buttocks. The operation takes place under general anaesthesia. The incision is stitched. After stitching, a support bandage is applied over the buttocks.
  • The treatment is ideal for areas with loose skin, such as the double chin, neck, abdomen, upper arms and legs.
